Beautify and Improve Sunny Slope for OLLI

Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, better known as OLLI, is a unit of Auburn University Outreach. Our mission is to enhance the quality of life in our area by offering member-centered courses, hands-on learning experiences, and social interaction for people over 50. Experienced volunteer instructors lead affordably priced courses in a variety of subjects and settings. We operate out of the historic Sunny Slope house and property on S. College Street.

We ask you to give so that we can commission a pen and ink drawing of the iconic Sunny Slope site by the nationally-acclaimed architectural portrait artist Melissa Tubbs. Our plan for 2020 includes reproduction of the Tubbs’ architectural portrait to promote and expand OLLI courses and activities at Sunny Slope and to enhance our space with ADA-compliant ramps and bathrooms, lighting, and classroom furniture.

We will use the art in OLLI’s visual communications. We plan to reproduce Tubbs’ portrait of Sunny Slope to promote OLLI courses, programs, and events, and to improve and expand engagement with adult learners for lifelong learning in the greater Auburn-Opelika community.

We also will use funds to enhance the classroom and meeting spaces at Sunny Slope to better serve adult learners over 50 years old. This includes essential improvements to make our spaces and bathrooms ADA compliant and update lighting and basic classroom furniture to accommodate more adult learners.

Melissa Tubbs will give an artist talk on Tiger Giving Day (Feb. 19) at the Boykin Community Center, 400 Boykin St. in Auburn as part of the OLLI Brown Bag Lecture Series. (Lunch at 11:45 a.m.; Program begins at 12:15 p.m.. Bring your own lunch. Tea and dessert provided.)

An artist reception begins at 2 pm at Sunny Slope where the public can view selections from Melissa Tubbs’s exhibition, “Celebration & Preservation: Drawing Alabama’s Architectural History.”
