Monitor Water Quality in Alabama

The AU Water Resources Center will use funds raised to support stewardship opportunities focused on education and testing of surface waters and private wells throughout Alabama. 

They will partner with other Auburn faculty members to provide community members with bacterial screening products for private wells through the new Extension Well Water Program.

Funds also will be used to provide water education toolboxes to participating County Extension offices that include Alabama Water Watch citizen science chemical and bacteriological kits and hands-on educational displays, such as the EnviroScape watershed model. Travel to counties to provide training for these resources also will be covered by funds raised.

Clean water and healthy ecosystems are critical for Alabamian's quality of life. Many households rely on private wells for drinking water. However, the quality of water flowing through our backyards or in private wells is often unknown. A lack of reliable information about water quality of surface waters or private wells makes it more difficult to detect and prevent threats to environmental and human health. 

Thankfully, there are simple steps we can take to protect and improve water resources in Alabama. The Auburn University Water Resources Center supports research and Extension/outreach programs that are available to all 67 counties. These programs not only raise awareness of water quality issues, but also provide community members with opportunities to be actively engaged as stewards of water resources.
