Portable Sawmill Provides New Opportunities

We are raising funds to purchase a portable sawmill, which will provide educational, outreach and research opportunities to the School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences.

This sawmill will serve as a portable learning laboratory for students to observe the most efficient ways of sawing lumber and apply what they have learned in the classroom. This equipment would complement our forest harvesting class so that students can better understand textbook principles.

This equipment could also complement our urban forestry minor as a class project to provide community participation in the process of recycling trees in a sustainable urban forest. Without the potential to establish this program, felled trees in urban areas would most likely end up in landfills.

The sawmill would also help us research production systems and new technologies like environmentally friendly wood preservatives.

And a portable sawmill would allow students and faculty to educate and serve the public.
