Solving Hunger with Technology

One in three Alabama children don’t know where their next meal is coming from. Ten percent of the state’s senior citizen population is food insecure. And more than 1.8 million Alabama residents live in food deserts with limited access to grocery stores.

This Tiger Giving Day, the Hunger Solutions Institute asks for your help to fight hunger in our community and beyond.

This project, launched in conjunction with the Harrison School of Pharmacy and College of Agriculture, will establish mobile healthy food hotspots where students, equipped with university technology, will assist Alabama’s senior citizen population and families with young children in ordering groceries at accessible locations.

Your gift this Tiger Giving Day will help provide healthy food to those who need it most.

The Hunger Solutions Institute at Auburn University takes a multidisciplinary approach to the solvable problem of hunger by leveraging local, state, national and international partnerships across sectors to further Auburn’s domestically and globally-recognized efforts to ensure everyone has access to healthy food. Through collective action, the Hunger Solutions Institute employs best practices toward ending hunger and leads the charge against food and nutrition insecurity through its initiatives: End Child Hunger in Alabama, Alabama Campus Coalition for Basic Needs, Presidents United to Solve Hunger and Universities Fighting World Hunger.

Wright’s Market is a local, independent grocer that offers online ordering and grocery delivery including SNAP/EBT payment. The market also offers a 50 percent discount on fruits and vegetables purchased with SNAP benefits, which helps to bridge the gap between socioeconomic disadvantage and nutritious food.

The partnership between Wright’s Market and Auburn’s Hunger Solutions Institute is multilayered and this portion of their combined efforts to end hunger will make more healthy food accessible to some of Alabama’s most vulnerable populations.
